Indonesian Forest Practices Our Indonesian government does not want to destroy our forests and as a result we have established very strict regulations concerning logging practices to ensure that the forestland will not be depleted. The Indonesian govenment has set aside 55%of the forests as permanent forestland or as park and refuge; these land may not ,under any circumstance, be used for logging or other commercial purposes.Another 10% of the forest has been dedicated as conversion forest that will allow for conversion to farms, plantation forest and other uses. Only 35% of the forestland has been designated as open to timber harvesting.Under very strict regulatins less than 3% may have been harvested each year. The practice of "clean-cutting' is prohibited in I ndonesia. Over two million acres of forestland in Indonesia are owned and managed by our consortium of companes, After harvesting yearly allotment of lumber an area must be replanted and 35 years must pass before coming back to a previously harvested area, this allows the proper time for regeneration.The Indonesian government has strict penalties for companies who violate the regulations.The government has also placed a reforestation tax of 10% per cubic meter of wood harvested.This generates over US$300 million per year,which is used to replant the forest.
