SLATEVision was founded in 1997. The factory is situated some 150 kilometres (100 miles) west of Johannesburg, South Africa, in the heartland of the South African slate industry. This area is rich in minerals, with the largest deposits of Platinum worldwide originating in the nearby Rustenburg basin. SLATEVision is supplied with multicoloured "Autumn Slate" from its own nearby quarries. Autumn Slate Quarries", a trademark name, is known for its rich, strong, autumn-hue coloured slate. With its contrasting browns, reds and yellows, the slate has a smooth surface texture with clean cutting lines. SLATEVision's factory has a floor area of about 6 000 m2 (60 000sqft) and incorporates stone-cutting, wood and steel works. SLATEVision employs approximately 160 people. Drawn from surrounding villages in a largely agricultural area with high unemployment rate, all employees are trained on the job. Over the years, they have honed their skills in their respective trades. A further 140 quarry workers mine slate at Autumn Slate Quarries, adding up to a total of 300 people currently engaged in the manufacture of Slate Tables at SLATEVision MARKETS SLATEVision has to date exported well over 200 000 tables, primarily to the USA and Canada. Customers range from "single-store-owners", buying one 20 foot container per year to "multi-store-owners", buying 40 foot containers on a monthly basis. SLATEVision also supply Importers and Distributors on a regular basis, who in turn distribute the Slate Tables countrywide. Apart from the main USA and Canada markets, SLATEVision also sell to Importers in Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan. IMS slr, manufacturers of chairs and tables in Italy, also import the Slate Tables. From Italy they are warehoused and distributed worldwide, together with IMS's products. In Southern Africa, SLATEVision's Tables are distributed through "The Slate Centre", located in Randburg, Johannesburg.
