LYs founder, Mr. Tan Kwee Chai, started the furniture design and manufacturing business in 1976, operating as Lian Yu Furniture Co. The first factory was located in Sri Gading, Batu Pahat with a built up area of 20,000 square feet and a workforce of eight (8) employees. Initially, Mr. Tan Kwee Chai started the operation with the assistance of Mr. Tan Kwee Lim and Mr. Boo Ngek Hee. Under his strict and efficient supervision coupled with good business acumen, the operation of the company gradually expanded. As the companys business continued to expand, more qualified staff were recruited. In 1987 the Company ventured into Singapore market which represents a significant step taken to penetrate into the international market. In view of the increase in worldwide demand and the international recognition of wooden furniture from Malaysia, in 1991 LY Furniture Sdn. Bhd. (LY) was incorporated and took over the operations of Lian Yu Furniture Co. The following year LY participated in the Johor Furniture Fair and won the 1st Prize for Best Paneling Furniture Award. In 1994 LY moved its manufacturing operations to a larger factory in Sri Gading with a total built-up area of 45,000 square feet. Equipped with advanced machinery and equipment and larger space, the production capacity of LY increased by 300% which enabled it to meet the increased demand from the international market. LY began exporting its product to Japan in 1992 and subsequently to the US in 1998, following its participation in an exhibition held in San Francisco. LY further expanded its operating capacity in 1999/2000 through the purchase of additional machinery with more advanced features. Today, LY has eleven factories, with a total land area of 23.5 acres and workforce of 800 workers.
