CMA-CGM has agreed to buy Brazilian cabotage line Mercosul from Maersk. This works strategically for Maersk in meeting one of the regulatory requirements for its purchase of Hamburg Sud. For CMA-CGM, Mercosul’s 10,000 TEU adds a small part to its desire to expand via acquisitions. Panjiva data shows CMA-CGM has been building market share organically – its Brazilian market share increased 0.3% points to 9.5% points in the past quarter. Mercosul adds 0.2% on international volumes, as well as the capturing its domestic customers’ need for international shipping.
