Korea Line Makes First Hanjin Nibble, Bigger Bite Needed

Korea Line’s $31 million purchase of the commercial assets of Hanjin Shipping’s Asia-U.S. business leaves the future of its port and vessel assets unresolved. Korea Line has an exclusive purchase deal until January 5. The port assets at Long Beach and Seattle seem more likely to be bought by co-owner MSC. A credible container shipping business would require vessels too. Based on press reports of scale, Panjiva analysis suggests the vessels Hanjin United Kingdom, Hanjin China, Hanjin Spain, Hanjin Korea and Hanjin Netherlands would be the most likely targets.
