President Donald Trump has committed to not changing existing gun legislation in the U.S. at the recent National Rifle Association conference. He also called for increased weapons ownership in Europe, drawing opprobrium in France in particular the BBC reports.
That comes as background checks for weapons purchased in the U.S. climbed 6.3% in the first quarter of 2018 on a year earlier, Panjiva analysis of FBI data shows. That includes March’s 2.77 million which was the highest since the post-election boom of December 2016
The U.S handheld weapon retail sector has begun to react to that, with imports of weapons and parts having risen by 10.0% on a year earlier in April, Panjiva data shows, after a 10.5% decline in the first quarter. Similarly for ammunition there was a surge of 56.2% in April after a 37.5% drop in the prior three months.
