Asia-first global trade recovery remains fragile

Global trade volumes inched closer to pre-pandemic levels in September with a decline of just 1.0% year over year according to CPB World Monitor data. The downturn pre-dates the pandemic with trade tensions and tariffs between the U.S. and its major trade partners having been a defining factor. Asian markets led the recovery in September and have likely continued to do so in October with the dollar value of global trade likely having risen by 2.1%.
