Brazilian poultry producer BRF has suspended exports to the EU due to food safety concerns. That follows a USDA block on Brazilian beef exports to the U.S. in mid-2017. It is also unfortunately timed given current Mercosur-EU trade talks are focused on settling agricultural market issues. Brazilian poultry exports have already struggled, with a 3% drop in the three months to January 31 on a year earlier, led by a 17% drop in shipments to Europe from all suppliers. BRF’s largest remaining markets are Japan (33% of exports in the past year) and China (28%).
