CAP Capitalizes on Steel Strength to Expand Exports

Chile 102 Materials - Metals/Mining 748 Metals - Steel 511 Mexico 880 Peru 43

Steelmaker CAP SA will reopen one of its Chilean steel furnaces in response to improving market conditions. Total Chilean steel exports have climbed 25.1% year over year in the 12 months to Feb. 28. CAP was the largest exporter ahead, with 19.0% of exports, ahead of MolyMet. CAP has also accounted for a significant proportion of Chile’s steel growth after a 153.9% surge in exports in the past 12 months. That’s been driven by shipments primarily to Peru but also more recently to Mexico. The latter may be a growing opportunity should the U.S. leave its section 232 duties in place.
