The Panama Canal saw the highest number of vessels crossing since 2012 in August, with a 10.7% year over year surge bringing the number of transits to 1,113. That’s notable given the slowdown in Transpacific traffic due to the trade war. There’s still evidence of the value of the Panama Canal for shipping from Asia to the U.S. east coast. U.S. seaborne imports from eight major Asian economies rose 10.7% year over year in August while shipments to the west coast increased by just 0.9%.
