The Maryland Port Authority has started investments to increase capacity at the port of Baltimore. That’s followed steady but slowing growth which has seen container handling rise 5.5% year over year in the 12 months to Jun. 30, down from a 7.3% annualized rate in the previous three years. Reduced imports from China – which fell 1.0% year over year in the 12 months to Jun. 30 and dropped 4.9% in 2Q – are to blame for the slowdown in growth, though imports from the rest of Asia and from Europe have compensated.
