BMW is the latest automaker to gain the attention of President-elect Trump, with a repeat of his threat of a 35% tax on Mexican-produced autos. BMW has recommitted to the plant it plans to build there. The company imports completed autos from Germany and the U.K. to the U.S. – these fell 16% in the fourth quarter, Panjiva data shows. Parts imported for production, including the company’s $7 billion Spartanburg SUV plant, fell 15% in the fourth quarter. That would suggest the company missed out on the growth in light truck sales seen across the U.S. in December.
