The Indian government has increased import tariffs on wheat to 20% from 10%. While expected, that was less than the 25% maximum previously rumored. The threat of tariffs has deterred Australian suppliers, which cut shipments to zero in September, or by 72% in the third quarter on a year earlier. Ukrainian supplies meanwhile increased by 42%, and Mexican supplies began. That didn’t stop an overall slide in imports however as grain traders including Louis Dreyfus and Glencore cast about for lower cost supplies.
