With all the news relating to U.S. port closures after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma it is easy to ignore the problems faced by Mexico’s ports. These come from those Hurricanes, as well as Hurricane Katia and the tragic earthquake on September 7 which has resulted in the deaths of over 60 people the LA Times reports.
The Mexican Maritime Secretariat has indicated that as of the evening of September 11 the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Veracruz are closed. Disruptions to container operations at Veracruz are particularly a problem – Panjiva data for imports and exports shows it was the largest port by handling in Mexico in July. The two ports combined handled 107,237 TEUs in September 2016, and have expanded by 18.3% in the 12 months to July 31. That would suggest a daily throughput in September 2017 of 4,230 TEUs per day on an uninterrupted basis.
