Shipbuilding faces coronavirus headwind as exports, orders fall

The shipbuilding industry has faced a mixture of demand and manufacturing disruptions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. While HMM has just taken delivery of the largest container ship on record, exports by all shipyards of new vessels from China, Japan and South Korea combined fell by 36.8% year over year in March and dropped by 9.0% for Q1 overall. The slowdown may be one reason for the South Korean government’s provision of over $1 billion of support for shipping lines and boat builders including DSME and Hyundai Heavy.
