The U.S. has normalized trade relations with Myanmar, with the Asian state now able to access the Generalized System of Preferences for tariffs. U.S. imports of goods are minimal ($20 million in July) but have been growing fast according to Panjiva data. The 69% growth in seaborne imports in August were driven largely by apparel purchasers, including Hennes & Mauritz, The Gap and JC Penney. Myanmar’s trade with China remains focussed on raw materials and gems.
