South Africa’s container handling surge appears to have ended after a 5% drop in throughput on a year earlier in November followed a 4% decline in October. There had been growth in 11 of the 13 months running up to September. While the main driver of the slowdown has been exports (21% lower in November), a 9% slide in imports shows the economy may be struggling more broadly. The most exposed shippers on South Africa-to-U.S. routes are MSC (51% of volumes) and Maersk (28% including Safmarine).
