Codelco Ends Copper Strike After Losing Out to BHP in April

Codelco has ended a strike at its Chuquicamata copper mine in Chile after two weeks, removing a disruption to around a fifth of its production. The strike came as the Chilean copper export industry had entered a downturn with total exports down 8.2% year over year in April. That was the result of a 10.2% drop in copper cathode export tonnage and a 5.1% slide in cathode prices. The U.S.-China trade war may be having an effect – exports of cathode to China fell 41.8% year over year in April in tonnage terms. The run-up to the strike may have already hurt Codelco’s exports, which fell 40.9%...
