COSCO Shanghai and Hong Kong Show Limits of Asia’s Trade Bounty

China 2971 Corp - Ports 880 Mode - Containerized 1468 Mode - Seaborne 1801

Asian trade remains robust, but not all ports are seeing the benefit. Container handling by COSCO Shipping Ports in China climbed 5% on a year earlier when adjusting for the restructuring at its Dalian port complex. That lagged the 8% seen across the mainland in part because of an 8% drop in handling at its Shanghai Pudong facilities. Congestion is likely the main reason for the Shanghai slowdown. Separately handling in Hong Kong also struggled, with a 4% drop on a year earlier being the third decline in the past four months.
