Hyundai MM May Be The Herald of a New Shipbuilding Cycle

Hyundai Merchant Marine’s CEO expects the container industry’s oversupply to disappear over the next 12 months in an interview with Bloomberg. He also looks ahead to new build opportunities, citing 15 to 16 new largest containerships to be built. This is partly a response to emissions regulations from 2020. It may also disturb the capacity discipline that the industry has shown since rates started to recover in April 2016. This discipline is shown by the 13% drop in new vessel exports from China, Japan and South Korea in 2016 to $66.7 billion. That’s the lowest level since at least 2008....
