JBS, Marfrig’s Brazilian beef could benefit from Argentine export ban

Argentina has stopped exporting beef in an attempt to curb inflation, which has led to closures of meat packing plants and a strike by ranchers. Argentina’s exports of beef accounted for 5.9% of global trade in 2019. That would suggest global shortages might be averted though prices could rise, particularly in China which purchased 57.8% of Argentina’s beef exports in 2019. Brazilian meat exporters are likely positioned well to benefit from the ban. Exports to China from Brazil have also increased, rising 36.8% year over year in Q1.
