South Africa’s ports handled 4% fewer containers in October, reaching the lowest so far this year. That was the result of a 10% slump in imports. The grounding of the MSC Panama in Durban was one of three resulting from significant storms mid-month. That caused a port closure and subsequent remediation work. By contrast most of the bulk ports, including Richards Bay, were less affected resulting in a 19% rise in total cargo handling nationally.
