Peru’s Timber Felled on U.S. Logging Scrutiny, Reputational Risks May Grow

The U.S. government has blocked timber imports from Peru by Inversiones WCA “based on illegally harvested timber found in its supply chain”. That’s the second instance of such a ruling under U.S.-Peru trade rules. WCA accounted for $26.4 million of exports globally since Jan. 2012, though just $2.8 million headed to the U.S. There may be a knock-on with both reputational and customs oversight issues for all Peruvian exports, though the U.S. represented just 9.3% of exports in the 12 months to Jun. 30 from 14.9% in calendar 2019.
