Toymaker Hasbro will restart production of Play-Doh in the U.S. from the second half of 2018. This is reported to be due to higher shipping costs overcoming the higher costs of production, as well as an increase in U.S. sales. Panjiva data shows imports of Play-Doh merchandise climbed 245% in the 12 months to January 2017 vs. 2013, but fell 6% in the past 12 months. That is likely due to tools and accessories, as basic compound imports increased 12%. A return to U.S. production may also preempt tariff or tax changes – three quarters of current imports are from China.
