Shipyards’ April Slowdown a Hiccup Not A Slump

The global shipbuilding industry experienced a temporary slowdown in April, with exports of new vessels from China, Japan and South Korea down 49% on a year earlier. That includes the basis effect of unusually high exports from South Korea a year ago, with exports from China and Japan up 49% and 38% respectively. The turnaround will be driven by continued government support for South Korean yards including Hyundai MM’s commitment to double the size of its fleet.
