Tianqi Lithium’s SQM Purchase Brings Behavioral Change, Debt Woes

Tianqi Lithium is reportedly struggling to repay a loan to Citic Bank that was used to buy a 25% stake in Chilean lithium miner SQM. Since Tianqi’s purchase there’s been a marked change in SQM’s exports of Chilean lithium. Shipments to China represented 42.8% of the total in the three months to Nov. 30 compared to 12.4% in 2018. That came at the expense of shipments to other countries, though increased supplies from Albermarle’s Rockwood boosted total Chilean exports by 37.1% in November compared to a year earlier.
