Hyundai Merchant Marine may shortly join the 2M Alliance with fellow shipping companies Maersk and MSC. This has been coming for some time, but has been held up by the restructuring of Hanjin Shipping. Maersk and MSC have taken on nine container vessels from Hanjin Shipping, with HMM potentially taking at least two and probably more. A ‘2M Plus’ alliance would have had 16% market share of U.S.-bound volumes in the third quarter, according to Panjiva data. This compared to 19% for recently-approved Ocean and 14% for THE Alliance without Hanjin Shipping.
