MSC is in talks to buy a stake in Linea Messina. This is something of a surprise given it has stayed out of the current round of shipping consolidation. It is a particular contrast to Maersk that is both doing one large deal (Hamburg Sud) and has talked about smaller ones to follow. While Messina would only add 2% to MSC’s fleet capacity, its relative simplicity and lack of orders for new vessels may make it more attractive than larger operators like Grimaldi.
