The Port of New York will be able to start receiving 18,000 TEU vessels six months earlier than expected after an acceleration of the Bayonne Bridge project. Previously it had only be able to receive 9,800 TEU vessels into Newark and Elizabeth. That should allow a return to growth after annualized volumes peaked over two years ago. It has lost market share to Californian and south-eastern ports, mostly recently with import handling falling 8% in March, Panjiva data shows. Further investment in handling capacity will be needed, which Maersk’s APM Terminals is providing.
