The Panama Canal will close its east lane for 10 hours a day for 10 days in May. That may disrupt traffic from the east coast U.S. to Asia, including LNG shipments as well as containerized transport. Panjiva analysis shows the Panama Canal has significantly outpaced the Suez Canal since the former’s expansion last summer. In the first quarter its volumes handled rose 38.8% on five years earlier, whereas Suez saw a 3% decline. Suez may benefit from the Panama interruption, but that won’t change the long term trend.
