Auto Industry’s Descent Gathers Pace as New Tariffs Beckon

Cons. Discr. - Autos 1247 U.S. 5399

U.S. sales of foreign-made light trucks fell 5.9% year over year in March with a 5.9% drop reversing a 2.4% increase in the prior three months. Automakers do not appear to expect a reversal in that trend with seaborne imports of all cars and light trucks to the U.S. down 14.7% year over year in February followed by a 3.8% slip in March. Asian automakers have proven to be outliers with shipments by Honda, Hyundai and Nissan all rising in March. The prospects for imports include concerns about section 232 automotive duties where President Donald Trump is due to make a decision by May 17.
