CMA-CGM Shows Bigger Isn’t Always Preferred When Making Acquisitions

Container-line CMA-CGM will acquire south Pacific specialist Sofrana for an undisclosed sum, adding over 8,000 TEUs of capacity to its fleet. The deal follows a series of regional specialist purchases, most recently Mercosul in Brazil from Maersk, rather than large-scale acquisitions. That avoids the regulatory risks of bigger deals while still adding to the group’s services and feeder operations. At 0.9% of existing, owned capacity it doesn’t make a big difference but does show there is room for industry consolidation at both ends of the capacity spectrum.
