Hapag-Lloyd’s MGX Mediterranean-U.S. service has started calls at PortMiami. The service uses larger vessels after the port completed expansion works. Panjiva data shows the port had previously underperformed its local peers. Volumes of imports fell 5% in May and 4% in the 12 months to May 31. Port Everglades meanwhile grew imports by 10% and 15% over the same periods. The Hapag-Lloyd service will help expand utilization, but would only add 2% to monthly volumes based on prior shipment levels through 2013.
