The war for market share in Brazil’s shipping market continued in July, driven by an 11% drop in volumes shipped according to Panjiva data. Hanjin Shipping’s local operation experienced a 55% collapse in volumes, foreshadowing the broader group problems in July. Among the larger players, Hapag-Lloyd gained market share from Maersk and CMA-CGM during the month. MSC’s longer term chase of Hamburg Sud / Alianca continued, but was only partly successful. Expanding trade in Brazil in August may provide some respite to the shippers’ battle.
