Hutchison’s new port in Karachi, Pakistan, could open in October according to press reports. Whilst the ‘build it and they will come’ principle doesn’t always apply, a boost to trade is much needed. Panjiva data shows exports via sea to the U.S. fell 12.5% in July, led by an 18% drop in apparel lines. Similarly, exports to China dropped 27% in June, and Pakistan faces a $1.4 billion deficit with China.
