Indian production of lithium-ion batteries may start soon following government support under the “Make in India” strategy. That’s designed to reduce reliance on imports, which surged 77% higher in the first quarter, particularly from China which represented 90% of supplies in the past year. The industrialization of battery production will require sales to the consumer electronics manufacturing industry (including Reliance Infocomm and Foxconn) though sourcing of lithium and cobalt will provide a bigger challenge.
