Container handling through the Port of New York and New Jersey increased 8% in August to reach a new record. Unlike other U.S. ports exports did better than imports (6% vs. 5% growth) though the handling of empty containers was the biggest driver of growth. The expansion was due to larger vessels making use of the raised Bayonne Bridge. September data may show a further expansion if volumes were diverted from the southeastern U.S. after the recent hurricanes.
