The port of New York increased its container handling 1.2% on a year earlier in February, resulting in a new high for the month. Yet, that was due mostly to a 5% increase in handling of empty containers. Import growth of 1% was driven by European markets, which once again were led by shipments from Italy. These increased for the sixth straight month on higher imports of consumer goods ranging from dishwashers to condiments.
