Oakland Felled as Port as Export Handling Drops 10%

Container handling through the port of Oakland fell 6% on a year earlier in November to the second lowest since December 2015. Exports were the main driver with a 10% drop representing the fifth straight decline. A weaker local economy due to this year’s wildfires may be in part to blame. Imports also fell, by 2%, making Oakland one of the worst performing ports in the country that month. That’s partly been due to a slow rate of growth in volumes from China and Hong Kong (just 2% higher) though it is also losing market share in shipments coming from outside Asia.
