The European Commission has approved the merger of the three Japanese shippers’ container-line operations to form ONE without conditions. That is a contrast to its requirement of disposals of assets or route access from Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd in their recent transactions. It also puts the EC on the same side as the Singaporean government in approving the deal, whereas South African authorities rejected it. The combined entity will be sixth largest globally by shipping capacity, but will increase to fifth ahead of Hapag-Lloyd once its current build program is complete.
