The Panama Canal Authority has added one extra neopanamax slot per day through the end of the year on northbound routes, increasing capacity by 17%. That’s likely a reaction to Suez Canal Authority moves to cut rates to attract more of the larger vessels. Peak transits through the Panama Canal are normally in December and January, with the peak season starting in October. Year-to-date transits are already 5% higher than a year earlier, or 39% when adjusting for the capacity of larger vessels.
