Traffic through the Panama Canal hit its highest since 2012 in January, growing 6% on a year earlier. Adjusting for the increased capacity of neopanamax vessels the growth may have been 42%. Other signs of success are that 78% of neopanamax slots were filled and shipments via the Suez Canal have been falling. Among U.S. ports the biggest winners of the canal’s extension have been in the southeast, led by Savannah. The region’s share of imports increased 111 basis points, to reach 14.4%, since the extension opened. Northwest ports including Seattle lost the most.
