Container handling through South Carolina’s ports, including Charleston, expanded 17% on a year earlier in June. Exports and imports increased by similar amounts, marking a contrast to the pattern seen in California and Texas. Import growth has been driven by increased shipments from China, which jumped 45% on a year earlier as a result of the expansion of the Panama Canal in late June 2016. That effect may wane in the coming months in the year-over-year figures.
