Savannah Looking Plain as Handling Growth Slows

The port of Savannah’s container handling increased by 6% in March vs. a year earlier. That was the fifth straight month of growth, but the slowest since October. Looking purely at the handling of loaded containers, the expansion of exports and imports was similar at 7%. That contrasts with the pattern seen in California and Virginia where imports were stronger. The growth in shipments from China of just 2% may be the reason, and suggests the impact of the expansion of the Panama Canal has come to an end.
