Shipbuilding Renaissance Not Widespread, Faces Trade Conflict Risk

China’s shipbuilding industry showed signs of recovery in April with new orders reaching 4.9 million dry-weight tons, the highest since Feb. 2018. Improving profitability in the container-line sector – including Cosco Shipping – likely helped though the widening U.S.-China trade war may give shipping firms cause for caution. Globally the picture is mixed with exports from South Korea having soared 53.5% year over year in April while exports from Japan fell 18.1%.
