U.S. Port Handling Growth Slows in August, Hanjin Balances Hurricanes in September

Container handling at nine ports tracked by Panjiva climbed 4% on a year earlier in August. That was a sixth month of growth, but is a marked slowdown from the 9% rate seen a month earlier. That’s the result of handling declines at Houston, Charleston and Oakland. Houston’s 9% slide resulted from Hurricane Harvey’s disruption, which also explains part of Charleston’s 1% drop. Both Charleston and Savannah will have seen a slowdown from Hurricane Irma’s impact on September.
