Weapons Export Approvals Surge Under Trump, But Shipments Yet to Improve

The threat of U.S. airstrikes in Syria by President Trump raises the issue of U.S. military exports. Approvals for export sales have surged ahead under the Trump administration, with orders worth $23.5 billion signed off in the first four months of 2017. That was 3.5x the year earlier level and 22% higher than the monthly run-rate for 2017. However, the increased orders have yet to show through in actual shipments.
