20 Months of Growth for Canadian Ports At Risk from the China-America Trade Spat

Container handling through Canada’s big three ports rose 5% on a year earlier in June, the 20th straight increase. Montreal led with an 8% improvement while Vancouver climbed 5% on a rebound in exports. One uncertainty for the west coast ports, including Prince Rupert, will come from the U.S.-China trade spat. In the near-term it appears exports have prioritized U.S. shipments to beat the new duties, with volumes into Seattle and Tacoma up 14% vs. Rupert/Vancouver’s 4%.
