President Trump may sign an executive order to review all existing trade deals the U.S. holds, Politico reports. This is not the same as renegotiating them, of course. These require the 90 day consultation period with Congress under the Trade Promotion Authority, which has not even been triggered by the administration. That may happen within the next few days, however, as discussed in Panjiva research of March 13.
The U.S. already has 14 free trade agreements involving 20 countries. Panjiva analysis of U.S. imports and exports shows these represent 39.2% of U.S. total trade globally, though 29.3% points of this relates to NAFTA. Given the administration’s focus on trade deficits as a sign of a “bad” deal, then NAFTA, KORUS (with South Korea) and the FTAs with Israel and Colombia may all come up for a renegotiation.
