The CETA trade deal between the EU and Canada came into force on September 21 on a provisional basis, but still requires ratification by each EU member state. Despite the deal having been initially agreed in October 2016, EC records show little progress towards national approvals. Most countries have a good economic reason to sign – 12 of the 20 largest EU states by trade saw their exports to Canada fall in 2016 vs. 2013.
